Gynecomastia Surgery (Male Breast Reduction)

Many men suffer from a condition known as gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is the technical term for excess tissue in the male breast. This is a common condition among many men. If you have had hormonal changes, weight changes, or even effects from certain medications you may suffer from gynecomastia.

For some men diet and exercise are simply not enough to eliminate these embarrassing symptoms. Gynecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction, could be the solution. Gynecomastia surgery reduces breast size in men, flattening and improving the chest contours.

Good Candidates For Gynecomastia Surgery

Otherwise healthy men who feel that their breasts are too large are typical candidates for male breast reduction. It is important for candidates to maintain realistic expectations and understand that a positive outlook and specific cosmetic goals will help Dr. Reyna meet specific needs.

Male Breast Reduction Procedure Details

During gynecomastia surgery, Dr. Reyna will use one of two common techniques, or a combination of the two. When the excess breast tissue is made up of fat, liposuction is used.

If the issue is an enlarged breast gland, Dr. Reyna will remove part of the gland using an excision technique. Excision is also used if an enlarged areola needs to be made smaller. Severe cases of gynecomastia are treated with a combination of both excision and liposuction.

Results and Recovery

Your results will be noticeable immediately after surgery, and with proper care they will be permanent. Bruising, swelling, and discomfort of the chest for the first two to three weeks after surgery is normal. A support garment, bandages, and drains may be used to help support the chest and minimize swelling. It is extremely important for patients to rest and follow Dr. Reyna’s recovery instructions during the healing process.

Most men can return to the normal schedule within one week of surgery. Physical activities and light exercise may be resumed after about two to three weeks. Heavy lifting and chest and back exercises should be stopped for up to six weeks after surgery.
